STATEMENT

My practice focuses primarily on communicational failure, through the manipulation of cultural artefacts.

Through the medium of sound, performance and installation, I attempt to explore the relationships between defunct technologies, communicational attribution and the subsequent manipulation of the viewer. Often utilising sub-cultures to derive languages, I wish to engage the viewer in dialogue with the work to finalise the point of communicational failure.

For example, in my recent work ‘Free Gift’ I constructed photo-booth esq structure to engage the viewer with the recognisable aesthetic/function, however inside, rather than take a photo, I manipulated the booth to ‘bleach’ the viewer’s eyes temporarily with the word ‘gift’. The works ephemeral imposition functions to question the nature of a free gift, ‘something for nothing’, and highlight the arrogance of the artist and the struggle to communicate ideas.
