In mainstream music the first notion of backmasking was used by "the Beatles" in their album "Revolver". However the 'great hoax' of Paul McCartney's death was also balanced on the ideas of beatles songs backmasked, for instance at the end of the song "im so tired", when played backwards supposedly John Lennon says "Paul is a dead man, miss him, miss him, miss him".

Christian fundamentalists believed that back masking could bypass conscious thought and subliminally manipulate people's minds. In the Judas Priest court case in 1990 "James Vance et al vs Judas Priest", whereby the band were accused of being responsible for the self inflicted gun shots of a 20 year old man and the consequent death of a second american teenager because of a back masked message of "do it" on their song "Better by you, better than me".
